Carbon emissions from freight can be cut

Carbon emissions arising from the transport and logistics sector could be cut significantly if ships travelled at a lower speed and the industry adopted cleaner technology, a report said Wednesday. Skip related content

If ships cut their travelling speed by 20 percent, up to 171 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions could be saved, said the report by the World Economic Forum.

Meanwhile, if road and rail transportation were to switch to alternative or hybrid fuels, for instance, up to 175 million tonnes of carbon emissions could be saved.

In all, the report suggested 13 ways that could help the sector cut its carbon emissions by half.

The transport and logistics industry contributes an estimated 2.8 billion tonnes or 5.5 percent of total emissions.
