Burnt, drained and degraded peat bogs emit carbon dioxide eqviualent to more than 10-per-cent of global emissions due to fossil fuels, according to UN Environment Programme/Wetlands International report released at the Bali climate change meeting. Two-thirds of these emissions came from south east-Asia, yet no plans for protecting peatlands were discussed in Brazil.
